As a Naturopath, I’ve always been under the impression that coffee plays a negative role on the health of the consumer. I personally LOVE the smell but never really indulged in it, largely because of the jittery mess and insomniac state it left me in.
However over the past couple of years, I’ve been introducing coffee back into my diet in a way that has surprisingly left me feeling energised (without the shakes), mentally alert (minus the anxiety) and more satiated that I have ever felt throughout the early hours of my day.
How Coffee Supports Your Health
Coffee consumption is now showing to be beneficial for encouraging a healthy microbiome (supporting our good gut bugs), among easing depression and being beneficial for your liver health. (1) Who would have thought?
The important factors are the quality of your coffee and what you are serving it with. Pass on the pasteurised milk and sugar and reach for gut healing gelatin, blood sugar stabalising ghee (or butter) and energy enhancing Medium Chain Triglyceride (MCT) oil. When you add MCT oil (along with other good fats) into your diet, your body uses them (ketones) as a source of energy for the brain, which can be easily drawn upon and lasts for much longer than fast burning glucose energy sources.

Like me, you may also notice the ability to cruise through your morning without the urge to snack until lunch me. Stable blood sugars lead to increased insulin sensitivity in your body, a reduction in inflammation and therefore balanced hormones. Yes please!
How To Make A Healthy Coffee
This Creamy Coffee recipe is part of a collection of nourishing ways you can start your day, from my latest book: My Vibrant Morning.
What you’ll need:
Brewed black coffee (yes, quality does matter- mould free coffee is a must)
2 tbsp water
1 tbsp coconut oil, or MCT oil
1 tbsp organic, grass fed ghee or butter
1⁄4 tsp true cinnamon (optional, for extra flavour)
dash of vanilla (optional, for extra flavour)
What you’ll need to do:
Sprinkle gelatin over top of the water in a small dish and allow it to bloom
Add black coffee, bloomed gelatin, coconut oil/ MCT oil, ghee/ butter, cinnamon and vanilla into a blender (preferably stainless steel or glass)
Blend for 20 seconds, or until creamy, with froth developed on top
Pour back into your cup and sprinkle with extra cinnamon before enjoying
Note: In the winter months, you can also add powdered forms of medicinal mushroom, to give extra immune boosting effects
