In todays world, toxins surround us.
From the endocrine disrupting chemicals, such as pesticides used in conventional farming practises; parabens and phlatates found outgassing from furniture & your new car, plastics, cosmetics, as well as Bisphenol A (BPA) found in coffee cup lids, lining of canned foods, receipts, plastic containers, wraps and drink bottles. You can find my favourite natural body care products here.
Then there are the chemicals in cleaning products and cosmetics, the exposure to car exhaust fumes on your way to work or school, or perhaps the ongoing air traffic pollution of planes flying near by.
Heavy metals are rampant, such as mercury levels in fish (especially tuna and shark), amalgam fillings and vaccinations; lead in old paints, and in the dust of mining communities; aluminium in canned drinks and detected in chem trails.
It is also likely your prescription and over-the-counter medications are creating stress on your liver and we all know how dangerous alcohol, smoking (even 2nd hand exposure) and recreational drugs can be for the body to process.
The fact is that our exposure to heavy metals and toxins can far outweigh our natural ability to detoxify from them. Over time this leads to health challenges. Your body requires help!
Support Your Detox Organs
Before you turn your smile upside down in overwhelm of your daily toxic exposures, it is important to understand there are ways you can supporting your body’s detox pathways.
These recommendations are not a quick overnight fix, but instead something you need to work at as part of your daily or weekly routine. When done so, they are an effective way to reduce your daily toxin load.
Getting your sweat up has shown to be an effective and long term way of supporting the body’s detox, through the skin.
According to Dr Ben Lynch, the benefits of regular sauna use include:
- Increased oxygenation to peripheral tissues and cells.
- Increased elimination of harmful metabolites, heavy metals and solvents through the skin, via sweat.
- Decreased burden on the liver, due to increased elimination through the skin.
High Tech Health explain that the extra benefit of an infrared sauna, is the ability to penetrate human tissue, therefore being very effective at detoxifying from heavy metals, fat-stored toxins and metals trapped in connective tissue and the brain.
It is not however recommended to stay in any sauna, if you are feeling unwell in any way. In this situation, it is best to get out and leave it until the next day. Before using a sauna, it is always best to check with your GP if you are pregnant, have high blood pressure, a fever, diarrhoea, if you are menstruating or have any medical condition.
Dry body brushing before your daily shower, or before using an Infrared Sauna, can accelerate your blood and lymph circulation and therefore your detoxification. Find more information on the benefits of Dry Body Brushing here. Taking an Epsom Salt Bath is also effective at increasing your Magnesium levels after having an Infrared Sauna.
Castor Oil Packs
Castor Oil packs are a simple treatment that can help a wide range of conditions. They work by increasing the circulation, and promoting elimination and healing of the tissues and organs underneath the skin.
When a castor oil pack is applied, the oil is absorbed through the skin, and has a relaxing action on the smooth muscle beneath the skin. This positively affects all the hollow organs in that area, plus the liver, blood and lymph vessels, uterus, fallopian tubes, bowels, and the gallbladder.
Specifically, castor oil packs can be applied to help stimulate the liver’s detoxification function. The oil can also relieve pain, increase lymph circulation, decrease inflammation, and improve digestion.
Conditions that may benefit from castor oil pack treatment include Uterine fibroids, non-cancerous ovarian cysts (for both relieving ovarian pain and assisting the healing process after a cyst has ruptured), painful menstruation, headaches, liver disorders, constipation and other digestive disorders, gallbladder inflammation or stones.
Instructions of castor oil packs
- Soak a cotton or wool flannel in castor oil and place it over your abdomen, particularly around the liver area (right side, just under rib cage).
- Cover with a sheet of plastic (only if you are concerned about making a mess), followed by a hot water bottle or heat pack. If using plastic, be careful to avoid contact on the skin.
- For best results, use a minimum of three times per week for 30-60 minutes, but best, 5 times per week.
- For chronic conditions, undertake a 6-week treatment with castor oil packs 5 times a week.
Note: Although they will help symptomatically for any pain, to avoid heavy bleeding, you should not use the castor oil packs during menstruation. Instead perform Castor Oil packs between periods, as a preventative for menstrual pain.
By undertaking regular exercise, you will naturally support your blood and lymphatic circulation. As your lymph takes your nutrients to your cells and waste away, exercise supports your detoxification. Mini trampolining, hot or bikram yoga and power plate classes are top on my list for detoxing exercise.
Boost your liver health, by undertaking regular Coffee Enemas. By undertaking regular coffee enemas, you will help to increase the production and flow of bile from the liver and gallbladder. Toxins are bound in the liver with bile, which enables its safe elimination. Therefore, a greater detoxification of toxins occurs when coffee enemas are administered. This includes enhancing the effect of a parasite cleanse.
Hold the cringes! Your can learn how straight forward the process is here.
Every cell in the body uses Glutathione, with the strongest concentration being in the liver and kidneys. As I discussed in this recent post, Glutathione is a substance produced naturally by the body, to break down toxins and heavy metals into water soluble substances, so they can be eliminated from the body via urine and bile. Glutathione is also the body’s master antioxidant, working to mop up oxidative stress and free radical production from stress, over exercise, poor diet, pollution, toxin exposure, and simple day to day activities, such as breathing.
Enhancing your Glutathione levels is an important step towards supporting your detoxification pathways.
Through introducing regular exercise, infrared sauna treatments, dry body brushing, castor oil packs, coffee enemas and/ or Glutathione support, you will enhance your body’s natural detox pathways, to protect you from toxin exposure.
Dietary support is just as important to reduce stress and inflammation in the body, along with supporting your body’s detox pathways. You can learn the important steps in my Vibrant Woman Challenge.
