Let’s get up close with Melissa & Nick & find out why they’re heading our way very soon.
Melissa, firstly congrats on your latest book, Open Wide, A Radically Real Guide To Deep Love, Rocking Relationships & Soulful Sex. What can we expect can expect from your book and who do you feel will benefit from indulging in your words of wisdom?
Open Wide is the definitive guide to dreamy relationships, delving into everything from cultivating self-confidence, to unleashing your inner goddess, to creating epic friendships… right through to experiencing toe-curling orgasms on demand. It’s pretty safe to say that EVERYONE will benefit from reading Open Wide and I am so excited for you to get your hands on it.
I’m also a fan of your podcast and love the segment where you ask your guests how they prime themselves for their day. Can you both share your personal morning routines? Are there specific practices, foods and supplements that support your body, mind and soul to get the most from your day?
Melissa: There sure are. The first thing I (we) do every morning is say 3 things we are grateful for. We then connect. We hydrate with clean water as whilst we sleep our body gets dehydrated. I also meditate for 20 minutes no matter what. I move my body with either yoga, walking for f45. I oil pulling whilst having a shower and I give myself a full body goddess massage with essential oils when I get out of the shower.
Nick: My routine is very similar to Melissa’s, which is great because we get to do things together like meditation and walking. It starts with yoga for 10-30 minutes depending on how I am feeling on the day, then meditation and a walk. These are my essentials. Breakfast is a big one for me as I like to cover most of my nutritional bases by getting loads of nutrients in to start the day. I do tend to throw in a few extras like jumping in the infrared sauna, dry body brushing and a swim in the ocean. Then onto what we call the ‘deep work where I focus on the most important task for the day, which in an ideal world is writing music.
Nick, is there anything else which helps to get you in the zone for writing your music?
Nick: To be honest the zone comes when I simply show up. I don’t know how it is for most artists, but for me I always have resistance to start writing music (which is crazy I know) but as soon as get started it tends to flow from there. Doing it first up in the day helps a lot so that my left brain has not kicked in yet. Doing anything else first like social media or anything with numbers can be a real creativity crusher.
Here’s a few for both of you….
What foods & drinks feature regularly in your daily diet?
Nick: I always start the day with a massive smoothie, but I think of it more as liquid nutrients rather than a meal. It’s basically wild blueberries, my favourite greens powder and easy to digest protein powder by Equilibrium, some homemade macadamia nut milk and a litre of water. This takes 1-2 hours to sip on slowly so I get more time released nutrients and hydration to start the day. The rest of my day revolves around loads of vegetables which are the base of my diet and like Melissa a small amount of high quality animal protein at dinner with fats from olive oil, avocado or ghee.
Melissa: For me, drinks are green smoothies, loads of clean filtered water and coconut kefir. As for food, loads of organic veggies, wild caught fish, good quality fats and animal proteins.
What type of movement throughout your day and week, best serves you?
Nick: Right now it is walking, yoga, primal movement and surfing.
Melissa: I like to mix up the movement I do otherwise I get bored. I walk, do yoga and f45.
Being a type A personality myself, I’d love to know what practices you enjoy, or natural medicine you use, to help unwind from a productive day?
Nick: I think this is where the non-negotiables such as yoga, meditation and walking are so important. Anything that gets you out of your head (sympathetic) and back into a softer heart based (parasympathetic) space.
Melissa: Going for a walk, having a goddess bath, giving myself a goddess massage, making love, or reading in bed whilst diffusing essential oils all help me unwind.
You’re both such inspiring mentors for myself and many other women in our beautiful doTERRA ‘Path To Freedom’ community. Can you share with us your favourite blend of essential oils you love to diffuse or use topically?
Nick: Sandalwood is my daily go to for sure. I also love Ginger in between meals in my water or sipping on hot water with Ginger during a meal to support digestion.
Melissa: It’s too hard just to pick one but for stress, overwhelm and anxiety I love diffusing or in a goddess massage with coconut oil lavender peave, lavender, franky, console or clary sage. They are delicious and so calming for the nervous system.
